What Are Invisible Disabilities

Mental Health

INVISIBLE DISABILITIES

Invisible disabilities are those that cannot be seen by looking at an individual, but are very real just the same. They include Neurodevelopmental Disorders, such as Specific Learning Disorders (Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, Nonverbal Learning Disorder), Communication Disorders (Language Disorders, Auditory Processing Disorder), Autism Spectrum Disorder,  Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Psychiatric Disorders (Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Anxiety.)

EQUITY

Equity ensures that people are provided with the resources necessary to achieve equal outcomes to those of their peers.  With equity and hard work, those with disabilities have an opportunity to attain success comparable to those without disabilities.

ACCOMMODATION EQUITY

People with invisible disabilities are entitled to public accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Unfortunately, those accommodations are often inequitable. Equitable accommodations allow those with invisible disabilities to experience the same quality of life and enjoyment as those without disabilities.

WHAT WE DO

Normalize Now leads projects that create equitable accommodations, by working with businesses and government institutions to make everyday devices and activities equitable to all.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Currently, someone who needs a closed captioning device at a movie theater has to insert the base of the device into the cup holder of their seat, preventing them from storing their drink. People with auditory processing disorders who use closed captioning devices should not have to choose between their drink and cinematic experience. We are working to redesign the closed captioning device so that users can have their drink stored properly and understand the movie just like people without an invisible disability can.

We are also working on getting all political/town/county/state/ and federal level events closed captioned so that all constituents can participate equally.

People with dysgraphia and nonverbal learning disorder can't always replicate their signature on their absentee or in-person ballot. They also have a hard time filling in the bubbles and writing the required information. Normalize Now plans to work with elected officials to verify voting signatures for people with these disorders and uphold election security while ensuring every vote is counted.
